Marissa, tell us your story…

Tell us your love story!

Josh and I met in our Management 300 night class at Eastern Kentucky University. Night class was always a bummer because everyone is tired and nobody wanted to sit through a three hour class. Lucky for me, two of my friends were sitting in the back and the only seat available was right between my two friends and Josh. We ended up working on a few projects together. After a few weeks, he had successfully figured out my favorite thing to do was hike and be outdoors. He asked me on a date to go hike with a group of friends.

Ironically enough, when we exchanged numbers in class I put my number in his phone wrong. The weekend we were supposed to go hiking, I waited for a text with details and received nothing. Josh texted the number I accidentally put in his phone and never got a response. When we got back to class the following week, we realized what happened, laughed, and rescheduled our date to watch my favorite movie (Elf) and a big tub of ice cream to share with two spoons. And the rest is history!

Tell us your engagement story!

Throughout college Josh and I were involved in Campus Outreach, a ministry on EKU’s campus. This community played a huge roll in our lives and relationship.  In the fall of our senior year, Josh was doing an internship in Nashville, TN while I was back at EKU. One night Josh callCampus Outreach had a meeting every Tuesday and Josh had called me the evening of our Christmas party from Nashville…or so I thought.

For our Christmas party, we went to a house where a family provided us with some food, music, games, and more. Following the party, we would head to campus for our usual Tuesday night meeting. Following the party, I ended up locking my keys in my car and insisted on waiting for AAA to help get my keys out and I would meet everyone on campus. Some people were aware of Josh coming into town that evening to surprise me and so they were insistent on me getting in their car and coming back later to get it. I didn’t think much of it, so I got in a friend’s car and headed to campus.

When we arrived to campus, our meeting started and they announced they were doing a drawing for person to win a free trip to our CO New Year’s Eve Conference and I won. I had to come on stage and open the present beneath the Christmas tree. When I opened the box, there was a smaller box. Above it was a note that said, “Open the smaller box and turn around.” I opened the box, turned around, and burst into tears because I was holding my engagement ring in a box and Josh was right behind me! He grabbed the box, got down on one knee, spoke sweet words, and asked to marry me. It was a night I’ll never forget!

Where did you gather inspiration from for your RUSTIC wedding day?

I gathered my inspiration for my wedding day from Pinterest, magazines, and videos. It’s always been my dream to have a country-type wedding.

Why did you choose to have your wedding at Warrenwood Manor?

We chose Warrenwood Manor for our wedding because it was my dream location. I’ve always dreamed of being married at a place with history, being able to be on a farm, and being able to be outdoors! This could not have been a more perfect venue and I’m so grateful for such a lovely staff/owner!

What are three words you would use to describe the style of your wedding day?

Rustic, chic, relaxed! I would describe the feel as warm, welcome, fun, spiritual, and cozy!

How did you personalize your RUSTIC wedding day?

I enjoy books, so we used old books as the centerpiece. We had a lot of custom made signs from family and friends, and really worked hard to make every aspect something that represented either Josh and I together, or us individually. I love Johnny Cash so we used three records as our guest book and they are framed up on my wall now!

Of all the beautiful moments of your wedding day, which do you cherish the most?

I think the moment I cherish the most was during our ceremony. The pastor who was officiating had Josh and I turn to look back at the crowd of family and friends. He talked about the people in that crowd who loved us, supported us, and are excited to watch our marriage blossom for years to come. This was such a sweet moment and I couldn’t help but tear up!

Was there anything about your wedding you thought you would care about, but ended up not?

I think the thing that I thought I would care about was little things going wrong, but when it came to the big day, it faded away and all I cared about was marrying the man of my dreams and celebrating with our friends and family!

What advice would you give to a newly engaged couple starting the wedding planning process?

My biggest advice to a newly engaged couple is to just focus on each other. This is a season where planning can take over and it can become stressful. Choose the things that make you both happy, and focus on what the day you’re planning for is all about- you two!
