Meet the Couple | Katherine + Kline

  • The Bride | Katherine (Nelson) Bentsen is a licensed Clinical Social Worker. Fun fact, she went to college in DC and got to go to Obama’s inauguration and have Michelle as her commencement speaker.
  • The Groom | Kline Bentsen is a Construction Project Manager who has a secret talent for drawing that he honed while getting his degree in Landscape Architecture. Despite 5+ years together, Katherine just recently learned about this talent!
  • First Dance Song | “Wild Heart” by Bleachers feat. Sara Bareilles. We knew we wanted our first dance song to be from an artist we had seen live. Same reason we walked down the aisle to “Beginning to Feel the Years” by Brandi Carlile.
  • Honeymoon Location | Tulum, Mexico
  • Favorite Date Night | Kline travels and is gone most weekdays. So lazy weekend nights together with our dog = best date nights for us. Getting sushi and coming home to catch up on TV shows/movies or making dinner together, drinking wine, and catching up on our weeks.

Katherine, tell us your story…

TELL US YOUR LOVE STORY!

We met on Derby Day 2013 at Keeneland! We were both tailgating with friends. One of our friends sat in potato salad. Some people may have been, um, over served. It poured rain. It was definitely a day! Then we didn’t see or talk to each other for maybe a month or so. After running into each other again Kline asked Katherine on a date, dinner at Grey Goose in Lexington. And as Kline says, “It took eight months for her to go on a second date with me.” We were close friends with lots of adventures (wedding dates, music festival buddies, basketball game pals) for a while before finally jumping into a relationship in December 2013.

TELL US YOUR ENGAGEMENT STORY!

We got engaged on August 3, 2016. We woke up and made plans to go have lunch on a patio somewhere. Before doing that we took our dog, Albee, on a walk at a local park. Kline acted like a total weirdo (“I’m just checking my phone to tell people that they changed the Frisbee golf course out here!” Lies.). We went home, Katherine got in shower, and afterwards there was a card and flowers on table with Kline and Albee waiting to propose! Very sweet, simple, and us.

Katherine was insistent on doing her nails before going to lunch (to show off new ring, duh!). Kline played video games while he waited. We went to Grey Goose (first date spot) for lunch and, to Katherine’s surprise, all our best friends were waiting to celebrate with us! It was such a fun, laid-back day filled with some of our very favorite people. We said the feeling of that day was exactly the feeling we wanted to capture for our wedding.

Additional fun fact – Katherine accidentally saw a picture of the ring in February (six months before the proposal!) and spent a lot of the Spring/Summer of 2016 fretting that Kline had changed his mind and decided he didn’t want to get married. Turns out he’s just a very patient guy! And if you know Kline and Katherine, this is a VERY on-brand story. Katherine being an anxious mess who almost ruined a surprise and Kline being forever steady and calm (and able to work around Katherine’s surprise-ruining ways).

Katherine, tell us about your wedding…

WHERE DID YOU GATHER INSPIRATION FROM FOR YOUR WEDDING DAY?

A Practical Wedding. Offbeat Bride. Pintrest (of course). Garden and Gun. Southern Living. Martha Stewart Weddings. Keeneland Clubhouse/Thoroughbred Club. Katherine’s parent’s house and cocktail parties. LL Bean/J. Crew/Kate Spade.

WHY DID YOU CHOOSE TO HAVE YOUR WEDDING AT WARRENWOOD MANOR?

We had viewed a number of venues by the time we looked at Warrenwood. Katherine was feeling extremely disheartened by the search and we were seriously considering sacrificing our wedding vision to elope instead. Enter Warrenwood and Brittney! Within 10 minutes, we knew it was the venue for us. Warrenwood has such a classic Southern vibe with so many special areas and ways to customize an event. And Brittney’s energy was so wonderful. She was so eager to make our dream wedding come to life and we knew we needed her on our team!

WHAT ARE THREE WORDS YOU WOULD USE TO DESCRIBE THE STYLE AND FEEL OF YOUR WEDDING DAY?

Style – Warm. Southern. Classic.

Feel – Cozy. Lively. Meaningful.

One of the best compliments we got on our wedding was a friend saying, “It felt like a big, fun party and an intimate gathering of friends all at once.”

What were you most excited for on your wedding day?

Having all the people we love from so many different areas of our life in one room, at one time, celebrating together. As Katherine’s dad morbidly said, “The next time this happens it’ll be at your funeral.” Morbid but true! It’s such a special, indescribable experience.

IN WHAT WAYS DID YOU PERSONALIZE YOUR WEDDING DAY?

One of our favorite ways we personalized our wedding was by asking Katherine’s mother’s lifelong best friend to be our officiant. We met with her about once a month for the year leading up to our wedding. As we got closer, she asked us to write down our favorite things about each other and she used these lists during our ceremony. Our ceremony was so unique and special to us. From Apache blessings, to personalized lists, and custom vows – the combination felt like such a perfect representation of us as individuals and as a couple. Other personalized aspects – including our dog, letting bridesmaids choose their own dresses, using some of our favorite vinyls as our guest “books,” making our own playlist for the dance floor, and using songs from artists we’d seen live for first dance and procession.

WHAT WAS THE FUNNIEST THING THAT HAPPENED ON YOUR WEDDING DAY?

Too many to count! And some that are probably not the most appropriate to share on the internet! But truly, we don’t know that we’ve ever laughed as much as we did on our wedding day. A particularly great moment was when one of our flower girls began eating the berries off her bouquet and drooling blue during the ceremony. (She was absolutely fine! No flower girls were harmed in the making of this wedding, people). A number of people came up to us after the ceremony and said they got quite the kick out of this.

ARE THERE THINGS AOUBT YOUR WEDDING YOU THOUGHT YOU CARED ABOUT, BUT ENDED UP BEING UNIMPORTANT?

So many things. The timeline, things going wrong, the usual stuff. But truly, the day of, so many things could have gone wrong and we would not have even blinked. Heck! Some stuff did go wrong (uh, our DJ’s assistant drove his car right behind our ceremony as it was happening) and Katherine didn’t even notice! Kline told her about it the next day. We were so wrapped up in the excitement and happiness of the day to notice. It also helps to have an incredible team of people you trust (shout out to Amber and Brittney). They made it easy to be relaxed!

OF ALL THE BEAUTIFUL MOMENTS OF YOUR WEDDING DAY, WHICH DO YOU CHERISH THE MOST?

Our ceremony. We both always thought we’d fly through the ceremony and be anxious to dance and sip cocktails and have fun with our family and friends. The ceremony went above and beyond our expectations and will forever be one of the most special moments of our lives. We also loved the time between first look and ceremony. The entire bridal party was in the Groom’s Suite waiting for the ceremony to begin – drinking cocktails, snacking, listening to old school hip hop, and playing retro video games. Everyone was so relaxed and excited. It was such a happy time and very representative of us and our people.

What ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE TO A NEWLY ENGAGED COUPLE STARTING THE WEDDING PLANNING PROCESS?

Have some deep talks just the two of you before involving other people in the planning (parents, wedding planners, bridal party, etc.). This is about your marriage! So make sure you two are on the same page and focused on the same goals. We both picked three “non-negotiables” (or things that were a level 10 important to us on our day) and worked really hard to make those happen for each other.
