30 Questions for Your Bartender

Your wedding vendors shape how your day looks, feels, sounds, tastes, and flows. They guide you through decisions, solve problems behind the scenes, and help bring your vision to life. In many ways, the team you build is just as important as the details you choose. But with so many options, how do you know which wedding vendors are right for you? Who can you trust?

They are there when the flowers arrive, when dinner is served, when the timeline shifts, when the weather changes. Some may work with you for months. Others may only be with you for a few hours.

What they bring matters.

But so does how it feels to have them beside you.

With so many wedding professionals to choose from, it can be difficult to know where to begin. A good place is to look beyond the finished product and consider the people behind it.

Start with people you trust

Ask recently married friends who they would hire again.

Ask your venue which vendors they enjoy working with.

Ask other wedding professionals whose work you admire.

Venues have a different view of the wedding industry than most couples do. We see who arrives prepared. Who communicates. Who treats people well. Who stays calm when something changes. Who consistently takes good care of their clients.

A referral won’t make the decision for you. But it can help you start with people who have already earned someone’s trust.

Pay attention to the experience

Beautiful work matters.

So does everything that happens around it.

Read reviews. Look through portfolios. Visit websites. Meet with vendors when you can.

But don’t only ask, Do I like their work?

Ask:

Do I like the way they work?

Notice how they communicate with you. Do they listen? Are they clear? Do they answer your questions? Do you feel comfortable telling them what matters to you?

Pay attention to how you feel after a conversation.

A wedding professional can be exceptionally talented and still not be the right fit for you.

Choose for what matters most

Every wedding has a budget.

You don’t need the most expensive vendor in every category. You need to know where your priorities are.

Maybe photographs are the most important part of the day to you.

Maybe it is dinner around one long table. A band that keeps everyone dancing. A planner who lets you stop thinking about the timeline. Flowers that make the room feel like spring.

Spend thoughtfully on the things you will remember.

The goal isn’t to find the lowest price.

It is to find the right value for the wedding you want to have.

Ask what happens when plans change

This may be one of the best questions you can ask a vendor:

What happens when something doesn’t go according to plan?

Because something probably will.

A delivery may be late. The weather may change. A timeline may fall behind. A family member may need help. The thing you planned six months ago may not make sense when the day finally arrives.

You don’t need vendors who promise that nothing will go wrong.

You need people who know what to do when it does.

Experience often shows itself there.

Know what you’re agreeing to

Before you sign, read the contract.

Know what is included. What costs extra. When payments are due. What happens if plans change. What the vendor needs from you.

It isn’t the most exciting part of wedding planning, but clarity is a kindness to everyone involved.

Good vendors should be willing to answer your questions.

And if something isn’t clear, ask.

Then let yourself trust them

There comes a point when you have read the reviews, looked at the work, asked the questions, and made your decision.

That’s when you get to stop searching.

You chose these people because you believed in their work and felt good about having them there.

Let them bring what they know to the table.

The right vendors won’t just make your wedding look beautiful.

They will make it easier to be present for it.

And years from now, you may not remember exactly how the timeline unfolded or whether every detail went according to plan.

You will remember how it felt to be there.

One last thing

If you decide not to hire a vendor you’ve spoken with, let them know.

A short message is enough. Thank them for their time and tell them you’ve chosen another direction.

It’s a small courtesy, but wedding professionals notice it.
